Nisyros
- Volcanic Island.
This
seductive island was formed millions of years
ago by volcanic activity and the giant crater,
Stephanos, is still the main attraction for
visitors.
The
volcano has been intermittently active for
centuries, and although the last eruption was
in 1888, continuous seismic activity has now
been recorded for more than two years. The
largest of five craters, Stephanos measures an
astonishing 300m across. You'll need strong
shoes for the 22m descent which, incidentally,
is made at your own risk. There is an
overpowering stench of sulphur dioxide (bad
eggs) but it's a price worth paying for this
once in a lifetime opportunity.
