This seductive island was formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity and the giant crater, Stephanos, is still the main attraction for visitors.
The volcano has been intermittently active for centuries, and although the last eruption was in 1888, continuous seismic activity has now been recorded for more than two years. The largest of five craters, Stephanos measures an astonishing 300m across. You'll need strong shoes for the 22m descent which, incidentally, is made at your own risk. There is an overpowering stench of sulphur dioxide (bad eggs) but it's a price worth paying for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Antimahia is an ancient settlement, found at the same place and holding the same name for more than three thousand years. There are many places worth seeing at the village and in the area around.
Within the village you may visit the «House of Antimahia», a good representation of the traditional house of the early 20th century. Opposite to the house you may see an old traditional windmill, the so-called «Mylos tou Papa» (the «priest’s mill»).
At a distance of 4 kilometers Northeastern to the village, via a good dirt track, you may see the ruins of the Medieval Castle, built in the 14th century by the order of the Knights of St. John, who also dominated the neighboring island of Rodos (Rodhes). Parts of the external strong walls, some castle-like houses and some cisterns are some of the constructions preserved. You may also see the old churches of Aghios Nicolaos (14th century) and of Aghia Paraskevi (18th century), both of them well enough preserved.
At Mastihari, you will see the ruins of the Early Christian Basilica, with a very nice mosaic floor.
There are also two traditional local feasts («panighyri») in the village, on the 30th of June, in honor of the Saint Apostles and on the 15th of August, in honor of the Assumption of Virgin Mary.
But the most important event of the village is the feast of Honey, taking place in late August; apart from dancing, singing and enjoying yourself, you will also have the chance to taste the very good honey of the area, along with a variety of sweets, based on this excellent product of the village.
Another important and interesting event that everybody expects, is the Wine Festival taking place in early September: you will taste abundant local wine, along with delicacies from the local kitchen and you will enjoy yourself with Greek music and dance, which lasts until the next morning.
